Their mission is notably to ensure the conformity of the fineness of works in precious metals and to mark them with the guarantee hallmark if they meet legal fineness standards.
Guarantee Hallmarks
To identify a precious metal, a hallmark is affixed to the jewelry.
Only houses accredited by the State can certify the metal content of the work.
In France, only jewelry weighing more than 3g of gold and 30g of silver must be hallmarked.
There are commonly two types of hallmarks :
The Maker's Mark
It allows the jeweler who made it to be identified.
It is recognizable by its shape containing the artisan's initials.
Before having the guarantee hallmark affixed or affixing it themselves to the works they hold, professionals must first affix the hallmark that identifies them as a professional, namely: a maker's mark if they are manufacturers.
